ESSEX (CelebrityAccess) – Keith Flint, frontman of The Prodigy has passed away at the age of 49.
Flint, who became an icon of the British electronic scene during the 1990s and was best known for his devil-horned haircut and sporadic dance moves, took his own life over the weekend.
Police were called to an address in Essex, eastern England, early Monday (March 4) at which time Flint was pronounced dead at the scene.
Flint, who originally joined The Prodigy as a dancer before becoming its frontman alongside rapper Maxim, contributed vocals to some of the group’s biggest hits including “Firestarter” and “Breathe.” He last performed with the band just over a month ago in New Zealand.
A statement released via The Prodigy’s official Twitter account read: “It is with deepest shock and sadness that we can confirm the death of our brother and best friend Keith Flint. A true pioneer, innovator and legend. He will be forever missed. We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time.”
Liam Howlett, who formed the group in 1990, confirmed via Instagram that Flint’s death was a suicide. “The news is true, I can’t believe I’m saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend. I’m shell shocked, fuckin angry, confused and heart broken ….. r.i.p brother Liam”.
“I cannot believe the tragedy of Keith’s passing – to say I have been knocked sideways would be an understatement,” said John Fairs, co-manager of the band, in a recent statement to MusicWeek. “Keith was an original, a true maverick whose chaos and influence in The Prodigy helped the band reach iconic status and I am honoured to have been on that journey with him, Liam and Maxim.”
Four months ago, The Prodigy secured their seventh consecutive No.1 album with No Tourists, a record for a dance act. The band was scheduled to embark on their first tour of North America in 10 years this upcoming May.
