WASHINGTON, D.C. (CelebrityAccess) It’s well-understood that Seth Hurwitz, owner of the 9:30 Club and I.M.P. in Washington D.C., is in the movie “Green Book” but, up until now, it wasn’t clear how he worked his way into one of the scenes of the Academy Award Best Picture.
Hurwitz has had a few roles on television before, starting off with a bit part on “Treme,” the HBO series co-created by one of his friends, George Pelecanos. Since then, casting director Meagan Lewis has placed Hurwitz in a few roles over the past decade, mostly in cop shows.
This time around, however, it came from persistence. He sent in a tape, then another, then another and didn’t hear back.
“I’m used to being in the driver’s seat,” Hurwitz told the Washington Post. “This has been an amazing lesson for me in humility because you can’t negotiate your way in here, you can’t charm your way in. You have to act your way in.”
Eventually Lewis sent him the script for “Green Book.” Hurwitz thought, “I have no chance in hell of getting this.” However, he eventually had lunch with Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis who happened to be friends with “Green Book” director Peter Farrelly.
“I’m going to say I owe it to Ted,” Hurwitz told the paper.
Hurwitz, who also owns the new venue The Anthem and operates Merriweather Post Pavilion, has a short moment in the film, playing a mobster alongside Viggo Mortensen in the opening scene and has one line.
He threw an Oscar party in Washington and said that many of his close friends had no idea he was in the movie.
“Wait, that was you? No way” Hurwitz said, repeating their surprise.
