LOS ANGELES, CA (CelebrityAccess) – The 91st annual Academy Awards compensated for a host-free ceremony with a night marked by greater inclusiveness and an emphasis on music in film.
The ceremony was kickstarted by Adam Lambert who took to the stage with Brian May and Roger Taylor to perform Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions.”
“Green Book,” the controversial film that told the story of world-class African-American pianist, Dr. Don Shirley, and US race relations in the 1960s, beat out Alfonso Cuaron’s subtitled, two-and-a-half-hour-long black and white film for the evening’s top honor, the Best Picture category. The film also won in the Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor categories, with Mahershala Ali taking home the latter award.
Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” won four awards including Best Actor, which went to Rami Malek, while Olivia Colman beat out frontrunner Glenn Close in the Best Actress category, for her role in the black comedy/period drama “The Favourite.”
Costume designer Ruth E Carter also made history Sunday evening becoming the first black woman in Academy history, to take home the Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work on “Black Panther.”
But, all eyes were on Lady Gaga as she took to the stage halfway through the ceremony, bringing her co-star Bradley Cooper with her for a live performance of “Shallow,” their duet from “A Star Is Born.” As was expected, Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt took home the Oscar for “Shallow” in the Best Song category.
