LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — NBC announced that radio and television host Carson Daly’s long-running late night television show The Last Call With Carson Daly would be taking its final bow.
In a statement released on Tuesday, NBC said Daly decided to step away from Last Call to spend more time with his family but will remain involved in his other projects at the network.
“My 20s was about finding a good job. My 30s was about taking on as many of them as I could. Now, in my 40s, I’m focused on quality over quantity. I want to do more with my Today family and continue hosting and producing The Voice and explore new opportunities,” Daly said.
Daly has served as the host of Last Call for 17 years after it debuted in 2002 and the show offered a mix of interviews with musicians, comedians, actors, filmmakers, and other artists, as well as pre-taped on-location musical performances.
While the show recorded fewer episodes per year than its late-night rivals, the show is on track to air its 2,000th episode on February 19th. The final broadcast date for the Last Call has not been announced.
“If you had told me in 2002 I would be a part of the historic NBC late-night family for 17 years, I would have said you were crazy,” Daly said Tuesday in a statement. “Hard to believe it’s been so long — 2,000 episodes. It’s time to move on to something new and let someone else have access to this incredible platform.”
Carson got his start as a DJ on FM radio, at stations such as 98.5 KOME and 106.7 KROQ-FM before he transitioned into a role at MTV, where he served as the host for the network’s flagship TRL, which featured a top ten video countdown and interview segments.
At NBC, Daly also serves as host of the network’s primetime talent competition The Voice, and as a host on Today.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, NBC will continue to program the 1:30 AM timeslot and plans to announce a new show soon. Potential candidates include comedian Chelsea Handler, who has a first-look deal with NBCUniversal, THR reported.
