(CelebrityAccess) — Chinese cinema had a big weekend at the box office with the debut of what has been called China’s first big-budget sci-fi thriller The Wandering Earth which opened to a cool $172.7M, according to estimates compiled by comScore.
The film, based on a short story by author Cixin Liu, recounts a high stakes bid to relocate the earth to save it from an unstable sun.
Wandering Earth’s high flying box office results included a limited opening in North America, where it was screened in twenty-two cities but did not find its way into the domestic top ten.
Another Chinese film, the sci-fi comedy Crazy Alien, also had a big debut this week, opening to $77.7M and featuring a largely American cast.
In North America, the Lego Movie 2: The Second Part debuted to a disappointing $35.0M and $53.1M worldwide.
