WASHINGTON D.C. (CelebrityAccess) — Leaders of the female-led political activist organization Code Pink are calling on a number of performers, including Mariah Carey, to pull out of an upcoming concert in Saudi Arabia.
“Why is Mariah Carey planning a January 31, 2019 concert in Saudi Arabia? Doesn’t she know Saudi Arabia is one of the most repressive and murderous regimes on the planet? Doesn’t she know that women fighting for their rights are tortured in Saudi prisons? Doesn’t she know that Saudi Arabia is bombing school children in Yemen?” a rep for Code Pink wrote in an open letter posted to their website.
To support their call for boycott, Code Pink also launched a petition drive, calling for the artists to pull out of the performance, which is scheduled to take place on January 31st as part of the Saudi international golf tournament in King Abdullah Economic City. To date, the petition has been signed by more than 3,000 people.
“Sign our petition telling Mariah Carey and the others planning to perform at the Saudi international golf tournament in King Abdullah Economic City–Dutch DJ Tiesto, Yemeni-Emirati singer Balqees Fathi and Jamaican rapper Sean Paul–to cancel their performances and call for the an end to the brutal Saudi war on Yemen and imprisonment of Saudi women activists.
Other artists on the roster who Code Pink are calling on to boycott the concert include Dutch DJ Tiesto, Yemeni-Emirati singer Balqees Fathi and Jamaican rapper Sean Paul.
Saudi Arabia has been a lightning rod for criticism recently, following the apparent murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Embassy in Turkey last year, and the country’s ongoing and ruinous war against its neighbor Yemen that has sparked a humanitarian crisis.
“If you perform at the Saudi international golf tournament in King Abdullah Economic City, you will be helping Saudi Arabia artwash their war crimes and repression of women, journalists, and anyone speaking out,” Code Pink said.
