ATLANTA (CelebrityAccess) — Soul legend and hometown hero Gladys Knight has been announced as the singer of the National Anthem ahead of the Super Bowl, the NFL announced on Thursday.
Knight, who is a native of Atlanta where the Super Bowl is taking place this year, will sing the anthem at Mercedes-Benz Stadium before play commences on February 3rd.
“I am proud to use my voice to unite and represent our country in my hometown of Atlanta,” Knight said in a statement. “The NFL recently announced their new social justice platform Inspire Change, and I am honored to be a part of its inaugural year.”
A seven-time Grammy-winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Knight is perhaps best known for her hits “Midnight Train to Georgia” and “That’s What Friends Are For,” and her 11 No. 1 R&B singles, including “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”
Knight joins the list of previously announced performers for the big game, including Maroon 5, Big Boi and Travis Scott, who are lined up to perform as part of the Pepsi Halftime show.
