LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Two new movies — Ralph Breaks the Internet and Creed 2, both contributed to a record-breaking weekend for box office grosses in North America.
Disney’s Ralph, which stars John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman, hauled in a an estimated $84.5 million from North American theaters over the long weekend. That’s the second biggest Thanksgiving opening ever, behind “Frozen,” (another Disney film) which made $93.5 million in 2013.
Directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston, the film is a 3D-animated followup to 2012’s Wreck-It-Ralph, and recounts the story of the behind-the-scenes lives of arcade game characters, and comes with no shortage of pop-culture references.
Internationally, Ralph debuted to $97.2M over the weekend but failed to dethrone last week’s reigning champion, Warner Bros. Fantastic Beasts: Crimes Of Grindelwald. Beasts conjured another $29.6M in North American theaters and $113.3M worldwide for its second week in major release.
Also opening this week was Creed II, the latest installment in the venerable Rocky franchise and reunited Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone from 2015’s Creed. Creed 2 generated an estimated $55.8 million over five days in North America, breaking the holiday weekend record for an action movie.
Overall, studios raked in an estimated $314 million domestically over the 5-day weekend, according to Comscore.
