TOKYO (CelebrityAccess) — Future Design Shibuya, a public-private partnership in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo, announced plans for a new football stadium in the busy urban district.

The proposed venue, Scramble Stadium Shibuya, would be built near Shibuya’s Yoyogi Park and have a capacity of up to 40,000.

The stadium will host Japan’s premier J-League soccer matches, as well as live concerts and events.

Originally envisioned by private developers, the Metropolitan Government of Tokyo and Shibuya Ward are now on board and considering relaxing regulations to allow the project to proceed.

Developers hope to create a community center with the stadium, likening it to a similar facility in the downtown region of Dortmund, Germany, which is surrounded by a mixed-use commercial district.

The preliminary plans for the stadium were unveiled at a “social innovation week” event called Shibuya 2018 MEET UP, which offered insight into the stadium concept.

The stadium, if built, will be the first major sports venue built in one of Tokyo’s 23 special wards.
