Las Vegas Honors Route 91 Harvest Victims With Remembrances, Strip Goes Dark

LAS VEGAS (CelebrityAccess) Several events occurred in Las Vegas yesterday to commemorate the 1-year anniversary of the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting.

The day began with a 6:30 a.m. sunrise ceremony where 58 doves were released.

Events also included a prayer on the steps of city hall, services at Vegas churches, candlelight vigils and a car club procession down the Las Vegas Strip, according to KTNV-TV. Hundreds gathered at in front of Mandalay Bay and formed a human chain around the shuttered site of the shooting.

An official dedication of the remembrance wall took place at 6:30 p.m. at the Las Vegas Healing Garden and, at 10:01 p.m., the time of the shooting, the Las Vegas Strip went dark. Events officially ended at 10:05 p.m. with a reading of the names of the dead at the Healing Garden.

A year ago, a gunman on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay opened fire on 20,000 people at the Route 91 Harvest festival across the street, killing 58 and injuring 500. It is the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
