LAS VEGAS (CelebrityAccess) A BET documentary has spurred Las Vegas police to take another look at the death of Tupac Shakur.
In the documentary, which aired in February on the docuseries “Death Row Chronicles,” Keefe D, the uncle of a onetime person of interest, says that he was in the front seat of a car when someone in the backseat opened fire on the car being driving by Suge Knight and carrying Shakur September 7, 1996, as noted by Deadline Hollywood. The drive-by shooting killed the 25-year-old rap star, who was hit four times and died at a local hospital.
The cousin of Keefe D, real name Duane Keith Davis, was in the backseat. Orlando Anderson was a member of the Southside Crips and a person of interest in the investigation. Anderson was shot and killed in a gang fight in 1998.
Meanwhile, Netflix has released a documentary, “Unsolved: the Tupac and Bittie Murders,” in which Davis, also a member of rival gang the Crips, says the same things in a taped confession.
“I was a Compton kingpin, drug dealer, I’m the only one alive who can really tell you story about the Tupac killing,” Davis said, according to The Daily Star. “People have been pursuing me for 20 years, I’m coming out now because I have cancer. And I have nothing else to lose. All I care about now is the truth.”
“It just came from the backseat bro,” he added.
The series’ executive producer, Kyle Long, said that police should pursue the Keefe D connection.
“He went live on television and confessed to being an accessory to murder and the Las Vegas PD, as far as I know, is doing nothing about it,” said Long. “I just think it’s outrageous.”
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told local media Wednesday the interview prompted a fresh look at the case, which has never been closed, according to Deadline.
“We are aware of the statements made in a BET interview regarding the Tupac case,” they said in a statement. “As a result of those statements we have spent the last several months reviewing the case in its entirety. Various reports that an arrest warrant is about to be submitted are inaccurate. This case still remains an open homicide case.”
Despite media reports, no arrests are imminent, police said.
