TORONTO (CelebrityAccess) — In another indicator of Toronto’s love for Massey Hall, the city’s Mayor John Tory announced that June 14, 2018, was officially “Massey Hall Day.”
“Such an exciting day as we celebrate the 124-year cultural legacy of this National historic site with this proclamation and a night of powerful and inspiring Canadian performances,” said Deane Cameron, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Corporation of Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall. “We are weeks away before the temporary, two-year closure of the hall but still have a lot to offer Torontonians before we close those iconic red doors. Come out and celebrate history with us!”
The announcement of a ‘day’ for the storied concert space coincides with the launch of The Massey Hall Forever, a public fundraising campaign that seeks to raise money for the restoration and preservation of the historic landmark.
The campaign seeks to raise $142 million and has already secured commitments from federal, provincial and local governments, as well as the private sector for $116 million, 82% of its goal.
The drive comes in the final weeks before the Massey goes dark as part of an ambitious, two-year program to expand and refresh the venue. As a temporary farewell, the Massey will host an all-star concert on June 18th featuring performances by Jim Cuddy, Sarah Harmer, Joel Plaskett, Sam Roberts, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Whitehorse who will be performing double-duty as the house band for the evening.
As well, a concert film “Live at Massey Hall” films premiered today featuring the release of Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton, Andy Shauf, Jennifer Castle and Born Ruffians.
