ABERDEEN, WA (CelebrityAccess) — On Saturday, a fire swept through part of a museum in the hometown of the late Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain, destroying a trove of archival material from the artist.

According to the Aberdeen Daily World, the fire was originally reported at 9:26 a.m. and when firefighters responded to the call, they arrived to find the Armory building where the museum was housed, billowing with smoke.

The blaze appeared to start in the museum area of the building but quickly spread.

“Upon initial arrival, the crews did attempt an interior attack, but due to the conditions and some interior ceiling collapse, we opted to pull out and apply a full defensive attack,” Aberdeen Fire Battalion Chief Dave Golding told the newspaper.

The building is owned by the City of Aberdeen. Mayor Erik Larson assured the Daily World that the city would work to find new housing for CCAP, and to assist in salvaging things from the museum.

The Cobain exhibit at the museum contained a couch he slept on at a friend’s home for the fall of 1985, a bench from outside his home in Seattle and posters, artwork, band T-shirts, and other archival material.

It was unclear how much of the Cobain material survived but state archivists on Wednesday told the newspaper that they have managed to recover “thousands of documents” from storage in the museum’s basement.
