NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) Philip Roth, 85, novelist, died of congestive heart failure in a New York City hospital May 22.
Roth was the author of more than 25 books including “Portnoy’s Complaint” and “American Pastoral.” He focused much of his attention on the Jewish experience and won pretty much every possible literary award from the Nobel prize to two National Book Awards, two National Book Critics Circle prizes and the Pulitzer.
Roth identified himself as an American writer and said the American experience and the Jewish experience were interchangeable. He was met with criticism from feminists and Jews who argued his writing to be misogynistic and stereotypical. However, he remained one of North America’s best-known writers of the 20th Century.
