LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Paramount/Viacom Inc. scored a surprise hit this weekend after their latest movie “A Quiet Place” debuted at the top of the domestic weekend box office.

“A Quiet Place” which had a production budget of just $17 million, tells the tale of a family living very quietly amongst keen-eared alien predators and was helmed by director John Krasinski, who also stars in the film alongside Emily Blunt.

The film picked up early strong reviews and earned an impressive $71m worldwide in its debut weekend, with 50m of that coming from domestic theaters. “Quiet Place’s” success must come as a welcome change for Paramount execs as it was their biggest film debut since Star Trek Beyond in July 2016, and only their second since Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation the previous year.

Internationally, Warner Bros. “Ready Player One” continued to chug along, holding on to the top spot and earning an estimated $106.8M over the weekend, though ticket sales for the film in North America flagged, earning just $25.1M in its second week in theatres.

Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther” passed another milestone this weekend, $12.9M worldwide, bringing is cumulative revenue to almost $1.3 billion, and dethroning James Cameron’s “Titanic” as the third best selling movie of all time.
