LONDON (CelebrityAccess) Jason Iley, current BRIT Awards chairman, had no problem saying in an exclusive interview with Music Week that the upcoming awards show will have something that the Grammys did not: Ed Sheeran.
Sheeran – under pretty much any criteria the biggest music star in the world right now – was shut out of the major categories at the Grammy Awards. Not only did he not perform, he literally stayed home with his cat and slept through the presentation. He did win Best Pop Solo Performance for “Shape Of You,” but that only upset people.
At the BRITs, Sheeran not only has four nominations but is scheduled to perform, and Iley pulled no punches.
“We’re smart to have Ed on our show,” Iley said. “He should be on the show, he’s the biggest artist in the world. I think he was the biggest artist in America [last year] too. Obviously, there are some odd decisions in life.
“We continuously evolve our academy,” he added. “It changes on a year-to-year basis, we keep adapting it to try and keep it current and relevant – and fortunately they were smart and voted for people like Ed Sheeran, because he’s the biggest artist in the world.”
The BRITs are expected to take place tomorrow night. Other performers include Sam Smith, Foo Fighters, Justin Timberlake and Dua Lipa.
