FT. LAUDERDALE, FLA. (CelebrityAccess) The life and times of the colorful and legendary concert promoter Jack Boyle are expected to be celebrated in Ft. Lauderdale Jan. 8.
Boyle’s memorial service is expected to be held at The Amaturo Theater, at Broward Center For the Performing Arts, at 12:30 p.m., with reception to follow. The theatre is located at 201 S.W. 5Th Ave.
Boyle died Dec. 10 at age 83 at his son’s home in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., from complications from dementia, his son, also named Jack Boyle, told the Washington Post.
Boyle’s fiefdom of Washington, D.C., began with the purchase of the intimate Cellar Door, then known as the Shadows, in 1963 – which he sold that year and bought again in the 70s. The capacity was just 125 and Boyle had a no-talking policy implemented, yet it was the launching pad for several memorable recordings as well as stories like Boyle buying the first instruments for the then-fledgling Mamas & The Papas, as well as drinking and brawling with his buddy Kris Kristofferson in the club’s balcony.
From those humble beginnings, Boyle’s Cellar Door Productions, with Sam L’Hommedieu and Bill Reid, became an empire promoting acts like U2, Pink Floyd and Madonna. The company was sold to SFX Entertainment in 1999 for a reported $105 million.
