NORWALK, CT (CelebrityAccess) — To help his father celebrate his 90th birthday, singer-songwriter John Mayer has established the Richard Mayer Scholarship Fund at Fairfield County’s Community Foundation.
The Richard Mayer Scholarship Fund will be administered by Fairfield County’s Community Foundation and will provide four-year college scholarships for Bridgeport, Connecticut senior students attending public schools, who are planning to study education in preparation for becoming either a classroom teacher or educational administrator.
Fairfield County’s Community Foundation stewards over 150 scholarship funds established by generous individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that help students pursue their college education and strengthen the future of our communities. These funds cover many different areas of study and many have their own distinct eligibility criteria.
A native of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mayer’s father, who is now retired, was an educator in the state and served as the Principal of Central High School in Bridgeport for several years.
“Our moving into another decade has always been in sync,” Mayer told Hearst Connecticut Media in an interview. “So I wanted to do something of import.”
“I couldn’t have expected a better gift than this,” Richard Mayer added. “I gave 42 years to the Bridgeport education system and they gave me a wonderful life. This is just a wonderful way to be remembered and be doing something positive.”
