While often a classic and tasteful sartorial choice, Golden Globes attendees decision to wear black attire to the event was part of an organized protest campaign called “Times Up.” The campaign, organized by more than 300 figures in the entertainment industry, has raised millions for a legal defense fund to assist people who have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace.

Resplendent in a black gown of her own, talk show host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey was presented with the 2018 Cecil B. DeMille Award, making her the first African-American woman to receive the Hollywood Foreign Press Association prize for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” Winfrey used the opportunity to address the seemingly widespread sexual misconduct scandal that has gripped the entertainment industry since the news broke about Harvey Weinstein.

Winfrey received numerous standing ovations during her acceptance speech, in which she warned that for powerful men who abuse women, “their time is up.”

“I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon!” Winfrey told the audience. “And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women … and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say, ‘Me too,’ again.”

Other winners on the night included “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” which won the award for Best Motion Picture, Drama. The film also earned a Golden Globe for Frances McDormand, who took home the trophy for Best Actress, Drama.

“Lady Bird” took top honors for Best Motion Picture, Comedy, while Guillermo del Toro took the Golden Globe for best director for his film “The Shape Of Water.”

On the television side, Hulu had a big night, winning the award for Best Television Drama for their timely dystopian sci-fi series “The Handmaid’s Tale” while the HBO series “Big Little Lies” earned numerous awards, including Best television limited series or motion picture made for television, as well as Best performance by an actress in a limited series for Nicole Kidman, best supporting actress for a limited series for Laura Dern and best supporting actor for a limited series for Alexander Skarsgard.

Hosted by former late-night comic Seth Meyers, the Golden Globes at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
