“This has been coming a long time,” Clinton said in a statement. “Anyone who has been to the shows over the past couple of years have noticed that I’ve been out front less and less. The shows have been great!

“Truth be told it’s never really been about me. It’s always been about the music and the band. That’s the real P-Funk legacy. They’ll still be funkin long after I stop.”

Clinton’s agency, United Artists Agency, confirmed to CelebrityAccess that George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic are accepting offers for the 2019 edition of P-Funk’s annual “Mardi Gras Madness Tour,” to take place January to March. Parliament Funkadelic will continue to tour after Clinton’s exit.

Clinton, who turns 77 in July, recently underwent a procedure to have a pacemaker placed in his chest but stressed that the surgery is not a factor in his decision.

P-Funk has more than 50 dates scheduled this year including performances in Europe and Japan. (Clinton’s retirement from touring was announced in April in a trade magazine exclusive, which gained little traction.)
