Oscars Leave Shrine For Kodak Theater

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is moving the Oscars to the new Kodak Theater for the 74th Annual Academy Awards in March 2002. It will mark the first time in more than 40 years that the awards have been handed out in Hollywood.

The Kodak Theater also will become Oscar's first permanent home. It is next to the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where the first Oscars were handed out in 1929.

Since its inception, the nomadic Academy Awards have been held in nine different venues — 25 times at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 11 times at the Pantages Theater, 10 times at the Shrine Auditorium (its most recent home), eight times each at the Biltmore Hotel and Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, not to mention stints at the Ambassador Hotel and Grauman's Chinese Theater.
