Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Detroit's Fisher Theatre, The Nederlander Company and Wayne State University have established the Sarah Applebaum Nederlander Award for Excellence in Theatre. The award will establish a visiting artist fund for the WSU College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts.
Affectionately known as "Apple," The Apple Award will be presented to a nationally renowned theatre professional demonstrating excellence in their field. The first recipient of "The Apple" will be announced on Oct. 1, 2001, the Fisher Theatre's anniversary date and will receive $10,000 and a crystal apple.
Nederlander and her husband, David T. (D.T.) Nederlander began a theatrical dynasty carried on by their five sons. The Nederlanders assumed management and bookings for the Fisher Theatre in 1961.
