LAS VEGAS (CelebrityAccess) — The Mirage Hotel and Casino announced that it will close its doors for good this summer, making for the last call for a casino property that helped to pave the way for Las Vegas’ luxury megaresort era.
Set to close on July 17, the 80-acre property will undergo an extensive remodel that will see it scheduled to re-open in 2027 as the Hard Rock Las Vegas, complete with a 700 foot hotel tower in the shape of a guitar.
“After 34 amazing years, The Mirage Hotel & Casino will be ceasing operations on July 17, 2024. Over the next two months we will bid farewell to this iconic and historic property and then we will commence an incredible transformation. We look forward to the beginning of an exciting journey into a new era as Hard Rock Las Vegas will ignite the Strip with entertainment, innovation, and world-class hospitality,” the casino brand said in a statement announcing the closure.
Launched by former casino mogul Steve Wynn, the Mirage first opened its doors in 1989 as the first megaresort on the Las Vegas strip, leading to a construction boom of other large resort projects such as the Venetian and Bellagio.
Entertainment at The Mirage included shows such as Siegfried and Roy and Cirque du Soleil, as well as established musical acts such as Paul McCartney.
According to the Mirage, the company plans to pay approximately $80 million in severance packages for eligible union and non-union employees remaining with the property as operations wind down.
“While we pause for the incredible transformation of this iconic property, I’d like to thank all of the team members at The Mirage for their incredible commitment to helping us provide memorable experiences for our guests,” said Mirage President Joe Lupo.
“We are planning to host collaborative hiring events with other employers in Las Vegas community over the coming months. Connecting the thousands of talented Mirage team members who provide outstanding service with new employers is a top priority,” he added.
The closing of the Mirage will be the second major strip casino to close this year, following the shuttering of the Tropicana Las Vegas in April which closed after almost 70 years to make way for a new baseball stadium that will serve as future home to the Oakland As.
