ATHENS, Greece, (CelebrityAccess) — Greece has selected a consortium led by U.S. casino giant Mohegan Sun Gaming & Entertainment as its preferred bidder for a new luxury casino resort in Athens.
According to Reuters, the concession, if granted, will see Mohegan Sun and its Greek Partner build and operate the $9.4 billion casino resort on the site of the former Athens Airport for the next 30 years.
With the Hellenic Gaming Commission’s approval, the next step will include signing contracts and clearing the deal with government auditors and parliament before the tender is granted to the consortium.
Mohegan’s futuristic Inspire Athens plan, includes space for at least 120 gaming tables and 1,200 slot machines, along with a luxury hotel, a conference center, and a sports center.
According to the consortium, the resort will annually attract hundreds of thousands of tourists and generate more than 7,000 local jobs in Athens.
