Warner Bros’ ‘Joker’ Sets October Record In Box Office Debut

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Warner Bros.’ “Joker” well-reviewed Batman spinoff “Joker” set records t the box office this weekend, earning $93.5 million from North American theaters in the biggest October debut in history.

Internationally, “Joker” opened in 73 International markets this weekend, generating $140.5M from 22,552 screens. Along with the North American results, the worldwide opening weekend amounts to a total of $234M.

The R-rated film, which stars Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, as well Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Brett Cullen, Shea Whigham, Josh Pais, Frances Conroy, Douglas Hodge, Bill Camp, Glenn Fleshler and Marc Maro, was directed by Todd Phillips. Phillips previously was best known for directing comedies such as ‘The Hangover’ trilogy and the film adaption of “Starsky and Hutch.”

Universal’s “Abominable” now in its second weekend, added $12.0 million from North American theaters and $11.2M from international territories for a worldwide weekend take of $24.6M and global cume to date of $76.3M.

Rounding out the top 3 was Focus Features’ big-screen adaptation of the hit historical soap opera “Downton Abbey” which added $8.0 million in North American theaters and $14.6M with 37 international territories for a worldwide total to date of $135.4M.
