Warner Bros. The Curse of La Llorona Tops Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Spooky scares ruled the box office this weekend as Warner Bros. The Curse of La Llorona took the top spot, earning $26.55 million in North American theaters according to estimates compiled by comScore.

Based on Mexican folklore, La Llorona (the weeping woman), is the latest entry in Warners’ “Conjuring” franchise and stars Linda Cardellini, Patricia Velasquez, Madeleine McGraw, Sean Patrick Thomas, Raymond Cruz.

La Llorona was directed by Michael Chaves, a visual effects artist, editor, and executive producer who had previously only helmed short films but is in line to direct next year’s Conjuring 3.

According to comScore, the film debuted in 71 markets worldwide and all told, scared up a weekend worldwide total of $56.5M.

Now in its third weekend of wide release, Warner’s Shazam held the #2 spot, adding $17.340 million over the weekend, and bringing its domestic cume to $121.342 million.

Fox’s faith-based film Breakthrough came in at number three, debuting to an estimated $11.1 million, according to comScore’s estimates. The PG-rated inspirational drama tars Topher Grace, Mike Colter, Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, Marcela Ruiz Esparza, Rebecca Staab, Alissa Skovbye, Lisa Durupt, Isaac Kragten, Nikolas Dukic and is directed by Roxann Dawson.
