SAN FRANCISCO (CelebrityAccess) — Google’s streaming video service YouTube announced plans to offer a steep discount of the monthly subscription fee for their premium service for students.

According to TechCrunch, students will be able to access YouTube Premium’s ad-free videos and premium content for $6.99 a month instead of the regular $12.99 a month.

As well, students will also be able to take advantage of a similar discount to the company’s streaming music service YouTube Music, which they will be able to stream ad-free for $4.99 a month instead of $9.99.

The move echoes similar offers from other streaming services, such as Spotify, which offers students enrolled in secondary schools a discounted premium rate.

The discounted premium subscription rates are available to college and university students in the United States. Those who sign up before January 31st will get an extra dollar knocked off of the already discounted premium rate, the company said.

YouTube has been quiet about its subscriber figures since the YouTube Premium and YouTube Music service launched and the initiative may be a bid to raise their premium subscriber totals before the end of the fiscal year.

However, their overall platform figures are impressive, with the company touting almost 2 billion monthly active users and 450 hours of content uploaded every minute.
