MINNESOTA (CelebrityAccess) – The University of Minnesota posthumously awarded Prince an honorary degree, the Doctorate of Humane Letters, during a ceremony that took place on campus Wednesday.
Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, was present to accept the award on her late brother’s behalf. Presented by University President Eric Kaler and Regent Darrin Rosha, the degree was awarded in recognition of Prince’s influence on music and his role in shaping his hometown of Minneapolis.
Artists such as St. Paul Peterson and Cameron Kinghorn were joined by students from the university’s School of Music in a tribute performance that featured a number of songs from Prince’s extensive career-spanning catalog.
