Chalice California Festival Postponed Over Permit Issues

VICTORVILLE, CA (CelebrityAccess) — Organizers for the Chalice California Festival, a three-day music and art festival with cannabis theme, announced that the event had been postponed just a day before the gates were set to open.

Originally scheduled for July 13-15 at the SBC Fairgrounds in Victorville, organizers announced that the festival had been postponed for “approx. 4 months.” The notice cited concerns for the health and security of guests, vendors, and sponsors; jurisdictional issues between the local and state government; and accused the Victorville City Council of not “welcoming the cannabis culture to their city.”

According to the Victorville Daily Press, the on-site consumption of cannabis was a sticking point for the city council and said the council declined to submit a letter of support to the state Bureau of Cannabis Control that was required for the event to take place this year as part of the permitting process.

City Officials said they declined to send the letter based on legal advice, pointing to a city law that went into effect in December that restricted commercial cannabis activities in the city, the Daily Press said.

The event has successfully taken place in 2016 and 2017.

“We’ve enjoyed working with Chalice organizers over the past two years,” San Bernardino County Fair GM/CEO Geoff Hinds said in a statement to the Daily Press, “for what was a safe and successful event and wish them all the best going forward.”

Organizers for the festival have also filed suit against the city and Bureau of Cannabis Control seeking a temporary permit, the Daily Press reported.

For fans unwilling to wait until the thorny legal issues are sorted out, the festival is offering refunds and prompted such ticketholders to email Tickets@ChaliceCalifornia.com.

The festival, which was slated to take place from July 13 – 15 at the SBC Fairgrounds, featured a lineup that included Ludacris, Bassnectar and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.
