NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) The next step – or moonwalk that is – for Michael Jackson appears to be Broadway.
Jackson’s estate and Columbia Live Stage announced today that they are developing a stage musical based on the life of the King of Pop. Playwright Lynn Nottage, who has won two Pulitzer Prizes for “Ruined” and “Sweat,” will write the book for the play, according to The Wrap. Chrisopher Wheeldon, Tony winner for the Broadway musical “An American in Paris,” will direct.
The Wrap noted that “jukebox musicals” are increasing in popularity on Broadway, from “Jersey Boys” about Frankie Valli to “Beautiful” about Carole King to “On Your Feet!” about Gloria Estefan – not to mention “Holler If Ya Hear Me” about Tupac Shakur and the soon-to-shutter “Escape to Margaritaville” featuring Jimmy Buffett’s musical catalog.
