(CelebrityAccess) – Disney is making some serious moves to extend its traditional cable-TV platform into the digital space.
As more and more people are watching TV online these days, with some even dropping their cable services completely, it has become increasingly important for the global media giant to carve out a new space for itself or run the risk of becoming irrelevant within the marketplace.
Last month, Disney launched a $5-a-month sports streaming service, ESPN Plus, which makes available a number of extra baseball and soccer games not accessible via regular ESPN channels. It also currently has an entertainment streaming service in the works that will feature classic and upcoming movies from the Disney studio, shows from Disney Channel, and the Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar movies, however, that service will not launch until late 2019.
More significant is the company’s proposed purchase of 21st Century Fox, which includes the Fox television network and the X-Men movie franchise. Though Disney is still awaiting regulatory approval, the deal has been estimated at a reported $52.4 billion.
