YouTube, Vevo Respond To Major Music Video Hack

(Hypebot) – Hackers hit many of the most popular music videos on Vevo and YouTube Tuesday leaving “Despacito” and many other top music videos delisted or unplayable and replaced by messages from the hackers. Now both YouTube and Vevo are responding saying that while it serves as the delivery system for Vevo, it was the later that was hacked, not YouTube.

Vevo’s main “Despacito” video had been removed by the hackers, and its cover image replaced with a group wearing masks, red jumpsuits and pointing guns. [Also affected were videos by Taylor Swift, Adele, Drake, Shakira, Selena Gomez and others.]

“After seeing unusual upload activity on a handful of VEVO channels,” Google’s YouTube said in a statement provided to Hypebot, “we worked quickly with our partner to disable access while they investigate the issue.”

“Vevo can confirm that a number of videos in its catalogue were subject to a security breach today, which has now been contained,” Vevo said in their own statement. “We are working to reinstate all videos affected and our catalogue to be restored to full working order. We are continuing to investigate the source of the breach.”
