WALLINGFORD, CONN. (CelebrityAccess) Chicago rapper G Herbo, 22, originally scheduled to perform at the Oakdale Theatre Saturday (24), was arrested on gun charges in Chicago Thursday (22).
The Oakdale announced a postponement of the show on its Instagram page Friday (23) evening.
Jim Bozzi, vice president of marketing with Live Nation, which owns the Oakdale, said the decision to postpone was made by the promoter.
G Herbo, legally named Herbert Wright, was charged with one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon following a traffic stop with two others after their limousine driver tipped off police that some of his passengers had weapons, prosecutors said in court on Friday.
After the driver alerted police, officers did surveillance on the limousine, according to prosecutors.
About 10:30 p.m. Thursday, officers curbed the limousine in the first block of East Roosevelt Road in the South Loop neighborhood. Once the officers stopped the vehicle, three men, including G Herbo, exited. One of the men, Deavonte Royale Kimble was seated alone in the third row of the vehicle, and was the last person to get out. Officers found a Glock directly below where he was sitting, prosecutors said.
None of the men had firearm owner’s identification cards, prosecutors said. All three were charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
As for G Herbo, Assistant State’s Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said he was observed in the rear driver-side passenger seat, and officers saw him placing a handgun in the pocket directly in front of him. She said the gun was a Fabrique National loaded with rounds designed to penetrate body armor. There was one in the chamber and 30 in the magazine, she said.
Defense Attorney William Laws told the court that G Herbo has 8-month pregnant fiancée who he plans to marry in six months. He added that G Herbo has no prior felonies, no violent background, and has been a lifetime resident of Chicago.
G Herbo was ordered held on $25,000 bail
G Herbo has worked with fellow Chicago rapper Lil Bibby, as well as Nicki Minaj, Chance the Rapper, and Common. His output to date consists of four mixtapes, two EPs, and an album, “Humble Beast,” which came out in 2017.
In a 2015 video interview with Vlad TV, G Herbo talked about the violence in Chicago, saying that “a beef can start over something like an Instagram post.”
“Everybody can get their hands on a gun,” the rapper said. “Kids can get their hands on a gun. Money speaks. Money talks. … It’s guns everywhere, bro. They’re falling out of the sky.”
